Volunteers to clean Lake Mitchell Oct. 25 as part of Renew Our Rivers campaign

What: The 11th annual Lake Mitchell cleanup is Saturday, Oct. 25 from 8 a.m. to noon. Volunteers with or without boats will meet at Higgins Ferry Park in Chilton County. The cleanup will end with a picnic lunch.

This Renew Our Rivers cleanup is coordinated by the Lake Mitchell Homeowners and Boat Owners Association. Students from the Thompson High School Key Club will participate.

Last year, 175 volunteers collected more than two tons of trash.

Overview: Volunteers for Renew Our Rivers, the Southeast’s largest river cleanup,
have collected more than 9 million pounds of trash and debris from Alabama and Southeast rivers since its 2000 inception.

This cleanup will mark the last of 28 cleanups in 2008. Cleanups are held each year on the Cahaba, Coosa, Tallapoosa, Black Warrior and Mobile rivers in Alabama.

Directions: From Birmingham, take Interstate 65 to exit 208. Take County Road 28 (Lake Mitchell Road) until it ends at Higgins Ferry Park.
