Georgia Power employees volunteer statewide to commemorate

When: Monday, January 17, 2005

What: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. dedicated his life to the service of others. In honor of his legacy, Georgia Power employees around the state will use Monday, a company holiday, for volunteer service and community enhancement.

Where: Employees are working with civic groups to beautify neighborhoods and support community programs in the following Georgia cities:

• Atlanta Georgia Power employees in metro Atlanta will volunteer with the Southwest Atlanta YMCA, the Lutheran Towers, the Atlanta Community Food Bank and the Chinese Cultural Center.

• Albany Employees in Albany will assist the Flint River Habitat for Humanity with the construction of a new home in the Woodland Oaks Subdivision.

• Brunswick Brunswick employees will plant native grasses to beautify a median located at the intersection of Highway 17 and Gloucester Street. A clean-up of Albany Street from Risley Middle School to Lover’s Oak is also scheduled for that day. Georgia Power volunteers on MLK Day

• Columbus Georgia Power employees in Columbus will host a fun-filled day spent with their partners in education, students at Carver High School. A mentoring session stressing the importance of staying in school will be held followed by a cook-out. The students are also set to attend a Columbus River Dragons National Basketball Development League (NBDL) game.

• Gainesville Employees in Gainesville have volunteered to clean nature trails and build a bridge at the Elachee Nature Science Center.

• Macon Plant Branch, Plant Scherer and employees from Macon, in partnership with Volunteer Macon, will repair and paint the inside of the First Street Arts Center/Midstate Children’s Challenge. A painting project is also scheduled for the Children’s Museum. Approximately 20 students from Southwest High Law Magnet School will assist Georgia Power employees with their volunteer efforts.

• Newnan Employees from Plant Yates will help the Newnan-Coweta Habitat for Humanity.

• Rome Georgia Power employees in Rome will clean up an area at Lock and Dam Park that will ultimately be developed into a camping site.

Georgia Power’s commitment to volunteer service on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday is a statewide effort.
