Scam artist uses Georgia Power name

ATLANTA – A man falsely identifying himself as a Georgia Power recruiter has been taking money from people in metro Atlanta and promising them a job with the company.

Georgia Power’s Corporate Security department has received phone calls from eight victims so far. The victims said the man, identifying himself as Dwight L. Jones, is passing out business cards with the Georgia Power name on it. On the card, under Dwight L. Jones, is the title “Asst. Director of Recruit.”

The suspect’s pitch is that it will cost $145 to get a job with Georgia Power, but because the company needs employees it will only cost the victim $45 for a drug test.

Georgia Power, a subsidiary of Southern Company, does not solicit money from job candidates during the selection or pre-employment process. Also, company representatives carry badges with picture identification, their name and the company’s name and logo.

Georgia Power encourages anyone who has been victimized by this scam, or has information about the suspect, to contact Gwinnett County Police at 770-513-5190 or Georgia Power’s Corporate Security at 404-506-4116.
