Dry conditions prompt suspension of Jordan Dam springtime releases

Because of unusually dry conditions, springtime recreational releases of water from Jordan Dam that normally begin on April 1 have been suspended until June 15.

The springtime releases normally take place between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. daily, beginning April 1. The flows support recreational boating and fishing, and also provide water to accommodate kayakers and other whitewater enthusiasts.

Depending on conditions, springtime releases could be resumed at a later date. The public will be notified about any decision to resume the releases.

Record dry weather has also complicated efforts to raise the levels at some of Alabama Power’s storage reservoirs. Without significant rainfall, the ability to bring some lakes up to full summer pool this year may be jeopardized.

People with boats and other water-related equipment and facilities should always be alert to conditions on and below Alabama Power reservoirs, and take the necessary steps to protect their property.

For updated information about lake levels, call Alabama Power's automated Reservoir Information System at 1-800-LAKES-11 (1-800-525-3711). Specific information about the status of the Jordan Recreational Releases can be obtained from the system by selecting 4, then 7, then 5.
