Savannah Electric monitoring two tropical storms

Tropical Storm Bonnie and Hurricane Charley are expected to impact the U.S. coast, both with expected tracks near the Savannah area over the next few days. Savannah Electric is monitoring the situation and notifying employees in the event restoration efforts become necessary.

High winds and heavy rain could cause trees and limbs to fall, bringing down power lines. The company is prepared to restore power as quickly and safely as possible, but customers with medical or other special needs are encouraged to make plans in the event power is lost.

Important Safety Reminders:

« Customers are reminded to avoid downed power lines that may result from severe weather.

« Parents are urged to SPECIFICALLY REMIND children not to touch or go near any wire they may see, even if the wire appears to be "dead" or inactive.

« Downed lines could be hidden by tree limbs and debris or submerged in flooded areas. Take special care to look for wires before clearing debris or coming in contact with fences, vehicles or standing water.

How customers can help and prepare:

« Customers may report power outages over the Savannah Electric Outage Hotline at 1-800-390-2834.

« Downed wires should also be reported on the Hotline at 1-800-390-2834 or by contacting police using the 911 system.

« Should power outages occur, large appliances such as air conditioners, ovens and stoves should be switched off and turned back on individually after power is restored.

« Leaving porch lights switched on during an outage helps work crews in the field to quickly assess restoration efforts.
