Heavy storms cause widespread power outages; crews repairing damage

A series of late afternoon summer thunderstorms that brought high winds, heavy rains and fallen limbs Friday afternoon caused outages throughout Savannah Electric’s service territory.

The outages, which began around 3 p.m., were concentrated in, but not limited to, Savannah, Wilmington Island, Rincon, Springfield, Richmond Hill, Garden City and Pooler. At the peak of the storm, approximately 20,000 customers were affected. As of 6:20 p.m. power had been restored to the majority of customers.

Crews will remain on duty through the night to handle additional emergencies.

While power company officials are aware of the specific areas affected by the outage, customers who wish to report their individual outage locations are encouraged to call Savannah Electric’s Outage Hotline at 1-800-390-2834.
