Harrison County Household Hazardous Waste

The Harrison County Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day will be held Saturday, October 4th at Mississippi Power’s Plant Watson on Cowan Road. Drop off hours will be from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

The event is free to Harrison County residents (not businesses) who want to properly dispose of hazardous household products, including aerosols, cleaners and polishes, lighter fluid, detergents, disinfectants, gasoline, transmission fluid, motor oil and filters, car batteries, insecticides, paint, paint thinner, antifreeze, poisons and pesticides. Four tires per household will also be accepted at the Harrison County field office located just north of Plant Watson.

“It’s so important to make sure these kinds of household waste items do not make their way into our environment here on the Coast,” said Cindy Simmons, Harrison County Beautification director. “We’ll have all the equipment and methods necessary for disposing of hazardous materials on site.

“We try to make it easy—all that residents have to do is bring their items in. Our volunteers will unload their vehicles as they drive through the line.”

The hazardous waste collection day, now in its ninth year, is sponsored by Mississippi Power, the Harrison County board of supervisors, the Harrison County solid waste division, and the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources. Since 1995, more than 100 tons of hazardous waste has been collected.

For more information, residents may call 214-1405.
