Unprecedented storm could mean rebuilding  

As category 4 Hurricane Michael bears down on the Panama City area, Gulf Power is looking at the possibility that its system may have to be rebuilt in the hardest hit areas. Michael is an unprecedented storm forecast to make landfall with sustained winds of 145 mph.

“Northwest Florida has never encountered a storm of this magnitude,” said Jeff Rogers, Gulf Power spokesperson. “In the hardest hit areas, the possibility exists that we will be rebuilding our system while we are restoring power. Customers in the high impact areas could be without power for weeks. We’re estimating that 225,000 customers could be without power after Michael passes through.”

Because of high winds, crews may have to temporarily stand down for safety.

“Crews will restore power until winds reach 30 mph when it becomes unsafe for them to be up in buckets,” Rogers said. “As soon as winds drop they’ll be right back out there restoring power.”

More than 2,600 outside resources have been secured from at least 15 different states, as far north as Michigan and as far west as Oklahoma and Texas. Including Gulf Power’s 1,187 employees and 330 onsite contractors, that’s more than 4,100 resources ready to restore power.

“Every Gulf Power employee has a storm duty and they’re ready for this,” Rogers said. “We drill every year and crews train year-round — we’ve become very skilled in power restoration.”

Gulf Power will continue to update its customers with timely information through its Gulf Power app, website, outage map, news media and social media.

  • Gulf Power knows when your power is out. However, you can call 1-800-487-6937 if you have any questions about your outage.

Here are some safety tips:

  • Treat any downed wire as if it is energized because you can’t tell by looking if a downed wire is live or not. Telephone or cable television wires that are touching a power line could become energized and should also be avoided. Call 911 to report the location of any downed lines.
  • Standing water (puddles from flooding) may be energized from a downed line. Be careful not to touch or step in water near where a downed power line is located. If a downed line is near water — even a small puddle — keep well away.
  • Don’t attempt to repair the electrical system or pull tree limbs off lines. Let our trained work crews perform this potentially dangerous work.
  • Stay clear of areas where there is a lot of debris or downed trees because it could conceal an energized power line. Also stay clear of chain link fences which may be energized if touching a downed line.
  • If you have an electric generator, please ensure that you have isolated your home or business from the utility electrical service lines by opening main breakers or other devices. Do not connect portable generators to your household electrical wiring. This can cause serious injury to you and to our employees working on the lines in your neighborhood. Connect only essential appliances – such as freezers and refrigerators — directly to the generator.
  • If your power is off, turn off large appliances and air conditioners and wait 10 to 15 minutes after power has been restored before turning them back on.
  • If there is damage to your meter box or the pole on top of your meter box, you must first have an electrician make repairs before we can restore your service.
  • If there is flooding in your home or business, we may be unable to restore electric service until the building is inspected by city or county code officials.
  • Stay away from areas where our crews are working. If driving, follow road signs, drive cautiously and follow directions in the area of a work crew.
  • Please be patient. Our crews will work as fast as safety allows. Before neighborhood lines can be worked on, our crews must first repair larger lines that bring power to neighborhoods.

    JASPER, Ala. – Representatives from Alabama Power and Bevill State Community College were joined by community and business leaders Friday to celebrate the new HVAC (heating, ventilating and air conditioning) Training Center. The HVAC Training Center is a partnership between Alabama Power and Bevill State in collaboration with nearly 50 manufacturers and distributors. The facility is the first of its kind to provide training on multiple types and brands of HVAC equipment and will provide students the valuable skills needed for jobs in the growing HVAC industry. Classes began in August. “We are honored to work with Bevill State and our other partners to deliver this state-of-the-art HVAC Training Center,” said Alabama Power CEO Mark Crosswhite. “It has been designed to provide the best possible environment to gain the expertise needed to provide superior HVAC service to customers, all while growing and elevating Alabama and its workforce.” Students at the facility will have the opportunity to work on the latest equipment, using training aids and tools in real-world situations. “Bevill State Community College and Alabama Power have a long-standing relationship that has formed an effective template for public-private partnerships,” said Bevill State President Kim Ennis. “As Bevill State continues to focus on workforce solutions and economic development for our service area and beyond, the opening of the HVAC Training Facility in Jasper will have a positive impact for Bevill State, Alabama Power, program attendees and the economic vitality of the area.” The HVAC Training Center boasts 33,000 square feet of indoor facilities, including technology labs, seminar space and classrooms. There is additional space for the program to expand. Each lab is equipped with cutting-edge training equipment, including multiple types of heat pumps, simulators, geothermal systems, brazing, duct fabrication, whole house dehumidification systems, high-efficiency water heating, and ducted and ductless systems. The joint workforce development venture between Alabama Power and Bevill State will provide eligibility for certificate or degree credit options for students. Participants will be eligible to receive prior learning assessment (PLA) credits to count toward an HVAC long-term certificate or an Associate in Applied Science (AAS) degree from Bevill State. Alabama Power previously operated an HVAC Training Center in Verbena and last year announced plans to relocate and expand. Since its inception in 1986, the Verbena facility had provided training, professional development and continuing education for over 31,000 dealers and technicians from 43 states and four countries. The new joint venture was made possible through the cooperation, efforts and support of Alabama Power, Bevill State, the Alabama Community College System and elected officials. “I am excited that Walker County is now home to this incredible training facility,” said Alabama Senate Majority Leader Greg Reed (R-Jasper). “Bevill State is a flagship institution of the community college system and Alabama Power is a cornerstone of the business community. Their partnership and this training center will mean more people in our area have a chance to learn hands-on skills that will give folks a path to solid, well-paying jobs. “It has been a privilege to work with Bevill State and Alabama Power on this project, and I am eager to see its positive impact on west Alabama and the entire state,” Reed continued.
